Some lenses are bought to cover a specific focal length. Others are bought because you want to work differently. For me, the Laowa 10mm f/2.8 Zero-D FF AF for Sony belongs firmly in the second group.
I bought it almost a year ago to use with my Sony A7 IV. Although I have used it most often for concerts, parties and DJ sets, I have also used it for photography, real estate, interiors, exteriors, nature and other types of work.
What I like most is that it does more than simply show you more of the scene. It lets you look for unusual angles, get physically close to your subjects and create images that would be difficult to achieve with a more conventional lens.
Laowa did not send me this lens and this is not a sponsored collaboration. I bought it myself, and this review is based on my own experience.

It is not for every type of shot

A lens for finding different perspectives
At 10mm, the perspective changes completely. You can include a large part of the environment in the frame while still getting physically close to what is happening in front of the camera.
This is especially useful when I want a photograph or video to have more impact. I am not always looking for a balanced or conventional image. Sometimes I want the viewer to feel as if they are inside the space.
I have used it for:
- Concert photography and video.
- Parties and DJ sets.
- Aftermovies.
- Close shots of DJ desks, hands and equipment.
- Interior and real estate photography.
- Exterior, architectural and nature photography.
- Creative shots in tight spaces.
It is a lens that encourages experimentation. The camera position changes the result dramatically, so moving just a few centimetres can completely transform a shot.
My experience at concerts and DJ sets
This is where I have used it the most.
For video, I have used it both as a locked-off camera and for close, creative shots. I particularly like using it around a DJ desk, where it can show the hands, controls, lights and part of the atmosphere in a single frame.
It also works well when I want to include the artist and the surrounding space in the same shot. The image feels closer and more energetic than it would with a longer focal length.
That said, you need to learn how to control the perspective. Anything close to the camera becomes much more prominent and can look exaggerated. This can be exactly what you want for a creative shot, but it can also ruin a composition if you are not paying attention.

Using it for photography and other types of work
I do not use it only for video. It also gives me plenty of options for photography.
I like using it to experiment with unusual angles, show entire spaces and create images with a strong sense of depth. For exteriors and nature, it is particularly interesting when you want to include a large amount of the surrounding environment in the composition.
It can also be very useful for real estate and interior photography. You can show an entire room even when you do not have much space to move backwards.
However, that advantage has an important limitation. A room can look larger than it actually is. Even though the lines remain fairly straight, the 10mm perspective can create an exaggerated sense of space.
If you want interiors to look more natural, a 12mm or 16mm lens will probably offer a more balanced perspective. The Laowa 10mm is better suited to situations where you need to show a lot of space or want a more dramatic image.

Autofocus with the Sony A7 IV
I have the Sony autofocus version and, in my experience, it works very well with the Sony A7 IV.
For events and video, I prefer having autofocus. Situations change quickly, people move and you often do not have time to focus manually before taking a photograph or starting to record.
The autofocus lets me concentrate on composition and timing. For this type of work, that convenience makes the lens much more practical than a fully manual version.
Low-light performance
I have used it in clubs, music venues, concerts and other low-light environments. The f/2.8 aperture is useful in these situations.
The lens is bright and has given me good results when I expose carefully in camera. Of course, you still need to manage ISO, shutter speed and subject movement, but the combination of a 10mm focal length and an f/2.8 aperture gives you plenty of flexibility.
It is not a fisheye lens
One of the things that interested me most was getting a 10mm perspective without the typical fisheye look.
The lens keeps straight lines looking fairly natural, which is useful for architecture, interiors and full-space shots. The image still has the extreme perspective you expect from an ultra-wide lens, but it does not look as if everything is visibly curved.
That combination is one of its biggest strengths. It lets you create very wide and creative images without completely losing a natural-looking result.

Its main limitation
The biggest limitation is also part of what makes it special: 10mm is an extremely wide focal length.
It works very well for wide shots, creative photography and tight spaces. But when you need a close-up, a detail shot or a tighter composition, you have to get very close to your subject.
Sometimes I think a 10-24mm lens would be even more versatile for the type of work I do. It would keep the creative possibilities of 10mm while making it easier to move towards a more natural focal length when needed.
That is why I do not see it as a single lens for covering every situation. I see it as a lens that complements the rest of my kit and that I reach for when I want to create something different.
Would I buy it again?
Absolutely.
I would buy it again because of its versatility for photography and video, especially for concerts, parties, DJ sets, real estate, interiors, exteriors and creative work.
I would not recommend it to someone looking for a standard lens that can handle everything. But if you want to experiment with extreme perspectives, show a lot of space or create images that feel different, the Laowa 10mm opens up a lot of possibilities.
